World Kindness Day

Today, on November 13, as we celebrate World Kindness Day, I would like to recognize the efforts to two of our Wildcats who just happen to be brothers - Lincoln (fourth grade student in Miss Minster's class) and Badger (first grade student in Mrs. Driscoll's class).  Together, and with the support of their family, Lincoln and Badger accepted GDW's October Kindness Challenge, where they demonstrated over 100 acts of kindness!  Lincoln and Badger worked with their family to write a letter and then deliver it to 115 homes in our community, asking for donations to support the D300 Food Pantry, the Anderson Animal Shelter, the Community Crisis Center, and PADS of Elgin.  In total, they collected:

  • 17 grocery bags of food
  • 10 bags/boxes of blankets and towels
  • 3 large dog crates
  • 7 bags and boxes of hygiene products
  • 11 bags of winter apparel
I am so proud of Lincoln and Badger and am thankful that they chose to sprinkle kindness throughout our community.  Keep choosing kind, Wildcats!

Together or Apart, We are Wildcats at Heart!

The Gary D. Wright Elementary School learning community is incredibly special.  As we prepare to transition students to in-person learning or the District 300 Virtual Academy either tomorrow for students in grades K-3 or November 2 for students in grades 4-5, there are so many reminders of just how special our learning community really is.  To begin, our incredible PTO has created beautiful displays in our school's main lobby.  The first display reminds us that "together or apart, we are Wildcats at heart".  The hearts displayed were made by our students and contain heartfelt messages that show just how special the relationships are between our students, staff, and families.  This display also reminds us that regardless of which option students will be engaged in, we will continue to remain united as one learning community.  The second display promotes our school-wide focus on Kindness throughout the month of October.  Another very special part of our learning community is having the ability to connect with Mr. Gary D. Wright.  Mr. Wright sent me a message today and shared that he continues to think of the teachers/faculty, staff, students, and families each day.  Mr. Wright is a bright light and I am grateful for his support and encouragement as well as that of our PTO, families, students, staff, and community.  We are excited to begin welcoming students back to our school for the first time tomorrow since March 13!

GDW Named D300 Food Pantry's 2019 K-8 Hunger Champion

Congratulations are in order!  Gary D. Wright Elementary School has earned the D300 Food Pantry's highest annual honor - 2019 HUNGER CHAMPIONS. This distinction is awarded to the D300 K-8 school and high school that donates the most weight in food and non-food items during the calendar year.  Our school's donation of 4,452 pounds in 2019 was an outstanding show of support towards the D300 Food Pantry's mission to "Keep The Kids Fed". The D300 Food Pantry could not function to assist families without the support of school communities like ours. To commemorate this recognition achieved by Gary D. Wright Elementary School, on behalf of our school, I had the honor of being presented with a trophy at the D300 Food Pantry's annual board meting.  The trophy will be proudly displayed in the glass cabinet in our school's lobby.  This is truly such exciting news.  I am so proud of our Gary D. Wright Elementary School learning community for our incredible support of the D300 Food Pantry.  Thank you to our Wildcat students, staff, families, and community members for your generosity.  Way to go, Wildcats!  May we continue to support this amazing organization for years to come!  In honor of Super Bowl Sunday and our Hunger Champion trophy, let's continue to show our support throughout the next week with GDW's very own Souper Bowl Challenge.  Throughout the week of February 3-7, GDW students and staff are encouraged to bring in a can of soup (or other canned good).  Donations will benefit the D300 Food Pantry.

GDW Celebrates the 100th Day of School

Today, Gary D. Wright Elementary School students celebrated the 100th day of school!  When walking throughout our hallways and classrooms, I could just see that our students seemed much older and wiser!  Many of them dressed to impress by selecting outfits and hair colors that showcased their more mature look!  Students also celebrated the day by engaging in a variety of literacy and math activities featuring the number 100.  They even created a 100th Day quilt which is a fabulous addition to our school's lobby.  Happy 100th Day of School, Wildcats!

The Illinois 5Essentials Survey

Attention Wildcat Parents and Guardians: We Need Your Help

The Illinois 5Essentials Parent Survey is open now through February 14, 2020.  Gary D. Wright Elementary School’s parent response rate is currently at 8%.  Schools need a minimum of 20% of their parents/guardians to respond in order to receive a report.  We are hoping to increase our parent participation rate and would ask that if you haven’t already done so, please take an opportunity to share your thoughts on the important elements of our school’s effectiveness.  Each parent/guardian in your household is able to take the survey!
We sincerely appreciate everyone’s efforts in providing feedback for our school!
Thank you for helping us make Gary D. Wright Elementary School a great place to learn!
